Fish Used In Cuisine in the U.S.

While most of the United States is landlocked, that doesn’t mean fish is a rarity on the menu. In fact, fish is served across the entire country, and while much of it is caught in the ocean off the east and west coast, a number of fish consumed come from the freshwater lakes and rivers that are found across the U.S. In fact, most of the fish served in the U.S. are freshwater fish. There are a number of different types of fish served across the United States.

Fish Fries

Fish cuisine varies from location to location. In the South and Midwest, fish fries are very common. At these events, fish are usually battered up and fried along with fries, coleslaw, and other foods. These fish are usually served with tartar sauce, malt vinegar, and lemon. Often, fish fries are an “all you can eat” event that takes place on Friday evenings, especially during the Catholic period known as Lent, when meat is generally not eaten.

In the southeastern part of the U.S., fish fries are seen as social or family events that are often held in parks or large restaurants. Freshwater fish are typically served, especially catfish, flounder, bass, and bream. These fish are usually battered in a mixture of corn meal, buttermilk or milk, and various seasoning. They’re often served with hushpuppies, a deep friend corn dumpling and coleslaw. The city of Paris, Tennessee claims to be the home of the world’s largest fish fry.

Fish fries are also popular in Wisconsin, where they are offered at almost all taverns and non-chain restaurants. Many people traditionally go out on a Friday night for a fish fry throughout the year, no matter what religion they are. Perch and walleye are the most common fish fried up in Wisconsin.

In New York, battered haddock is the fish of choice for fish fries. Like restaurants in Wisconsin, many restaurants in New York offer fish all year round on their menu.

Fish Cooked at Home

Salmon is a popular fish of choice for both fishermen to catch and for families to cook at home. Salmon is caught and served on both coasts and these include Atlantic salmon, Chinook (Blackmouth) salmon, Chum salmon, Coho or Silver salmon, and Pink salmon. Land-locked salmon, or salmon fished up in the various lakes of North America, are also often caught and eaten. Salmon plays a large part in the cuisine of Alaska, and it is one of the state’s major sources of food.

Salmon is often grilled, and it appears on a number of restaurant menus and in stores. One interesting thing about salmon is that it is often served as part of Chinese buffets. These buffets, of course, are full of different types of food from around the world, and few of the dishes served on them are truly Chinese in origin.

Tilapia is another popular fish sold in fish markets and served for dinner in homes across the country. It’s also one of the cheaper fish on the market, making it an ideal fish for those living in landlocked states. It’s often not battered but instead simply baked in the oven until it’s completely cooked. Baked tilapia and salmon are considered healthier choices than fried fish, making them popular choices for those looking to eat better or lose weight.

Frozen fish patties and fish sticks are often served at home because they take much less preparation time than cooking fish purchased at a fish market. These fish sticks (or fish fingers) and patties are pre-breaded and require nothing more than cooking them in the oven for a short period of time. They are usually made of minced cod, Pollock, sole, or haddock. While the common shape for fish sticks is a rectangle, some fish sticks aimed specifically at children are made into different shapes.

These frozen fish foods are popular with parents because they’re easy to cook and because they contain a good amount of Omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to the minced fish variety, there are some premium fish fingers that actually contain fish fillet cuts instead of the minced fish. Two of the most popular brands of frozen fish items sold in the United States are Van de Kamp’s and Gorton’s.

Fish Served at Restaurants

Mahi Mahi, on the other hand, is often served in restaurants along both coasts. It is primarily caught in Hawaii and off the east coast between Florida and New Jersey. Fresh Mahi Mahi can be found up and down both coasts, but because the fish only live in the oceans, it is rarely found in the central states. However, it is sometimes frozen and shipped inland, especially during the summer when it is a very popular dish. Because of this, those shopping for Mahi Mahi in landlocked states will find it more expensive than salmon, tilapia, catfish, and other fish.

Restaurants like Red Lobster feature a number of different fish dishes on the menu. One popular promotion restaurants like this feature is the all you can eat seafood buffet. Often, as mentioned above, this buffet is featured on a Friday night for those who don’t eat meat on Fridays. However, because of its popularity, the seafood buffet has become a staple at many restaurants regardless of the day of the week.

Fast Food Fish

While many people order fish at sit-down restaurants and some cook fish at home, many people in the United States get most of their fish from fast food restaurants like Captain D’s or Long John Silvers. Long John Silvers mainly serves Alaska Pollock, Hake, or Hoki as their main battered fish. They fry these fish in a batter of white corn meal, flour, and several other ingredients. They also serve Alaskan flounder, baked cod, grilled salmon and tilapia, and other seafood like shrimp and lobster.

Imported Fish Dishes

In addition to frying and baking fish, imported fish dishes have also become popular in the United States. The most popular is sushi, or the Japanese cuisine that consists of raw fish. The fish used in creating sushi can be fish caught in the U.S., such as salmon, but much of the fish used in true sushi restaurants is imported from Japan. This makes “real” sushi much more expensive than Americanized sushi, although some dishes are very similar.

A Variety of Fish

As you can see, people in the United States eat a huge variety of fish. They consume just about every type of fish you can think of. While much of the fish is captured off the east or west coast or caught in the lakes of the country, some is imported, especially speciality fish. Whether baked or fried, served at a fish fry or at a fast food restaurant, one thing is certain: Americans love their fish dishes.
